Gramercy's Holiday Season Happens Outside the Park Gates This Year

"Didn't happen." That was how one reader described Christmas Eve 2025 at Gramercy Park in an update posted that night by the travel blog Your Mileage May Vary. Three days earlier, the same blog had told visitors to come for the one hour each year when the locked park opens for caroling, 6 to 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. on December 24, it added that two readers had written in to say the event no longer takes place. One said they had spoken with the people in charge.

Most holiday guides to the neighborhood still lead with that hour. For anyone who lives here and wants to plan this season, the useful calendar looks different. Every Gramercy holiday event with a 2026 date is on public ground: a clubhouse stoop by the park, a church on East 16th Street, and a market across Park Avenue South that runs from November 12.

The hour the guides still promise

The tradition is old and well documented. The Your Mileage May Vary post traces it to the mid-19th century and describes it as run by the Trustees of Gramercy Park, with music led by the Parish of Calvary-St. George's. In 2016, PIX11 covered a version hosted by the Gramercy Park Block Association. The Calvary-St. George's choir sang, and trustees Arlene Harrison and Rev. Tom Pike led the carols. The most recent advance confirmation from an established outlet came from 6sqft in December 2019, which reported that the Block Association had confirmed public access from 6 to 7 p.m. on December 24 that year.

The blog's account says the caroling was canceled for a few years during COVID. Then came the 2025 reader reports. For the rest of the year, the park is open only to holders of its keys. That blog puts the number of keys at fewer than 400, each tied to the original lots around the square. One of the clubs beside the park has already published its December 24 plan. The National Arts Club calendar lists the club as closed for the holiday on Thursday, December 24, 2026.

The park's seasonal decorating has its own record. The Block Association's archive notes that in 2017 the Trustees announced a Norway spruce for the park and that the Boag family crew installed it.

December 7: brass on the Tilden Mansion stoop

The neighborhood's closest replacement for caroling in the park takes place on a clubhouse stoop outside it. On Monday, December 7, at 6 p.m., the National Arts Club presents "Holiday Songs from the Stoop of the Tilden Mansion with the Gramercy Brass Orchestra." The club calls it its traditional holiday concert.

The performers are the orchestra's Principal Quintet, directed by trumpeter John Henry Lambert Jr., who grew up around Gramercy Park and founded the Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York. According to the club, the ensemble has won first place at the North American Brass Band Competition. The program covers familiar songs and carols. The club plans to hold it outdoors unless the weather is bad.

You'll need to sign up ahead of time:

  • The concert is free and open to the public, with registration through Eventbrite.
  • Registering does not guarantee entry, so arrive early.
  • If bad weather moves the concert indoors, coat check is limited, and the club asks guests not to bring large bags or backpacks.

This group has played the stoop before. Time Out New York listed the same quintet performing carols on the clubhouse stoop on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. The Christmas Eve hour has an uncertain future, but the stoop concert keeps coming back with a date on the calendar.

December 12: the parish moves its music indoors

The choir that used to lead the carols in the park comes from Calvary-St. George's. This December, the parish's holiday program is at St. George's Church, 209 East 16th Street. "Arts at the Parish: A Christmas Salon 2026" runs Saturday, December 12, from 7 to 9 p.m.

On its event page, the parish describes an evening of songs, stories and short plays "open to all who seek beauty and belonging." Food, drinks and conversation follow. Sea Dog Theater produces the salon, and tickets are available through Sea Dog Theater's event page. The stoop concert only asks for a free registration, while the salon runs on tickets, so get yours ahead of time.

November 12 to December 24: the market across Park Avenue South

The longest-running event of the season opens Thursday, November 12. The Union Square Holiday Market runs from November 12 through December 24, 2026, according to NYC Tourism + Conventions. Operator Urbanspace announced the season on November 1. Hours depend on the day of the week:

Days Hours
Sunday to Wednesday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Thursday and Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On Urbanspace's market page, the market describes itself as home to nearly 200 vendors. If you live nearby and plan to go more than once, the Made in NYC partnership is the reason to come back. Its makers rotate weekly. Urbanspace's announcement, carried by BroadwayWorld, names Silly Sketched Pets and SloGlo as examples and lists Frø as appearing at Union Square for the first time. The market closes for the season on December 24, the same evening the park's gates used to open.

Filling in the evenings between

The rest of the season's plans fit around those dates, and most of them are on Irving Place and 18th Street.

Irving Plaza has two shows on its official calendar. Yung Gravy brings The Joyrider Tour on Sunday, November 15, and Jesse Malin plays Friday, December 11. Both shows start at 7 p.m., and tickets are sold through the venue's show listings. The Jesse Malin show is the night before the Christmas Salon, so one weekend can cover both.

Pete's Tavern at 129 East 18th Street is open seven days a week on its regular schedule, posted on its own site. Its holiday decorations have been in the press before. 6sqft wrote about the bar's December decor in 2016.

For a quick bite on the northern edge of the neighborhood, Bun Mee opened its first New York location at 115 East 23rd Street on October 8. Patch reported dine-in and pickup hours of Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. That schedule is closed on Sundays, so plan around it for a Sunday at the market.

Gramercy's 2026 holiday dates
